Westin Engineering Kicks off
$3 Million Telecommunications Upgrade for
California Department of Water
Resources
RANCHO CORDOVA, CALIF. – Westin Engineering, Inc. has been awarded a $3 Million design contract by the State of California, Department of Water Resources (DWR) to support the department’s upgrade of its aging telecommunications network.
This project will include the design of the next generation of DWR’s telecommunications network to provide reliable and dependable data communications for information systems, video, and other operational needs. The network will connect DWR’s facilities statewide, from Oroville in the north to Los Angeles.
The existing network began operation in 1986 and was expected to serve the department for 10 to 15 years. As the system ages and replacement parts become difficult to obtain, the need to upgrade the system has become a high priority.
“The fiber optic network is essential to DWR performing operation of water and power management,” said Doug Harp, President of Westin Engineering. “As DWR increases its use of information systems to manage operations, it requires a communications infrastructure that meets today’s requirements while being scalable to address DWR’s future needs.”
Rather than installing new, expensive fiber-optic cable, DWR is considering innovative technologies such as Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) to meet their business needs. WDM allows a single strand of existing fiber optic cable to carry multiple light waves – each with its own data. This technology has the added benefit of allowing transition from one system to the other without causing significant operational impact.
In addition to WDM technology, the project will replace optical and T1 Multiplexers, provision interconnections to microwave systems, and replace the associated network management system.
Westin has a 20 year history of working with DWR to implement telecommunications, control systems and information technology.
